2018 Joseph W. Sullivan Award: Gary Katz

Gary Katz is the former President and Chief Executive Officer of the International Securities Exchange (ISE), the first all-electronic options exchange in the United States and one of the world’s leading exchanges.  Prior to that, he served as ISE’s Chief Operating Officer.

Mr. Katz is one of the principal developers of the unique options market structure – an auction market on an electronic platform – used by all ISE exchanges and is named as inventor or co-inventor on six patents that the Company received or applied for relating to its proprietary trading system and technology.

Before co-founding ISE, Mr. Katz served from 1997 to 1998 as President and co-founder of K-Squared Research, LLC, a financial services consulting firm. From 1986 until 1997, he held several positions in the Options and Index Products Division at the New York Stock Exchange. During his tenure at NYSE, Mr. Katz also was a co-founder of The Options Industry Council, a trade group dedicated to promoting the equity options sector through the education of the investing public.

Prior to 1986, Mr. Katz was an actuary with the Equitable Life Assurance Company and an Associate of the Society of Actuaries.

Mr. Katz formerly was an Adjunct Professor of Statistics at the Stern School of Business, New York University, where he conducted classes in business mathematics applications and also taught classes in options strategies and pricing at the New York Institute of Finance. Mr. Katz has an MS in Statistics with Distinction from New York University and a BA from Queens College.

Mr. Katz is a board director of Interactive Brokers, one of the premier securities firms that conducts its broker dealer business in over 100 market destinations worldwide. In its broker dealer agency business, IB provides direct access (“on line”) trade execution and clearing services to institutional and professional traders for a wide variety of electronically traded products including stocks, options, futures, forex, bonds, CFDs and funds worldwide.

Mr. Katz is chairman of the board of Farmer’s Pantry LLC, a start-up company in the consumer goods industry selling innovative snacks that include Cornbread Crisps and Meal Snacks.

Gary Katz is a board director of Long Island Autism Communities, Inc., a not for profit, 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to developing supportive integrated communities for adults with autism. Its mission is to provide a place for adults with autism to live, work, socialize and thrive in a proactive, integrated community that meets the needs of each individual with person-centered planning and support.

Mr. Katz lives on Long Island with his wife Shelley.  They have two girls and twin boys, one of whom is on the autism spectrum.

The Sullivan Award is named for Joseph W. Sullivan to recognize outstanding contributions in the options industry. Mr. Sullivan provided the vision and leadership to make listed options a reality and played a key role in the development of the Chicago Board Options Exchange, serving as its first president from 1972 until 1979.

The Sullivan Award was established in 2002 by the Options Industry Council and has become a regular feature of the Options Industry Conference program. The award acknowledges an individual’s achievement as measured by contributions to education, innovation and product development, and in helping to grow the industry.
